I have been helping people with their finances for almost 14 years now. Before I started Black Star, my longest "job" was 2-3 years, so to say I am shocked by how long I have been doing this is an understatement. But I know why - because it fulfills MY Why. I get to help people get financially healthier, to achieve their financial goals faster and easier than they thought possible. And the other reason I have stuck with it is that no two people are alike. Their stories, their situation and their goals - they are all different. So I don't get bored doing the same things over and over. We have a great process we follow, but everything else is as unique as the people we help. I have grown the company from being a solopreneur to 7 fantastic people in a great office space. I have gone from being new to being in the top 5% of advisors in the country. Along the way I have learned a lot - and I mean a lot - of lessons. And now whenever possible I share those lessons to spare them from the pot holes on the road to success.
What are you most proud of professionally? And who or why?
I am most proud of my invention - The One Number Solution(TM). I am most proud of that because it is the most comprehensive financial plan available and it covers things that most if not all the other plans fail to do. It starts with understanding goals and priorities, a review of spending patterns and starting to understand the underlying mindsets and working with how the brain works so that the plan is simple and easy to implement. And we are coaching all along the way. This solution has helped people increase their net worth faster than the client thought possible, it has alleviated stress and anxiety around money - it has allowed couples and families to have a new language around money. This has led to multiple speaking opportunities in Atlantic Canada and Ontario on the subject of behavioral finance.
What's your vision for Atlantic Canada in 10 years? What’s our biggest opportunity now?
Our biggest opportunity is to take responsibility for our own growth. To think big. Bigger than we thought possible. To take the stance of helping each other up instead of holding each other back. My vision for Atlantic Canada is one where we are more present and engaged with our family, community and career.
What was your greatest stage of growth? What made it a shift for you?
My biggest stage of growth occurred when I figured out how to package my product and service - this shift occurred because of coaching. I strongly believe in continuous learning, networking and engagement.
What's your favourite or most read book or podcast?
My favorite podcast is the Genius Network - I went to one of their events a couple of years ago and it blew my mind. My favorite book is Scaling Up.
What's your deepest learning from this past year?
My deepest learning is that I have to establish boundaries and stick to them. I must create space for rest and renewal or I am no good to anyone.
